The Mostly True Story of Jack by Kelly Barnhill

When Jack’s parents split up he is sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Hazelwood, Iowa. Soon he makes friends (his first ever), gets beaten up by the town bully (usually nobody even notices him), and the mayor wants to kill him. And that isn’t all. Jack has a funny feeling that there is magic around Hazelwood. (People disappear, the house moves, and the bird and two cats act like they really do know what is going on.)
This is a fantasy novel with a touch of mystery and coming of age. Although it is not driven by action (although there is plenty to keep both readers and Jack thinking), it is not a “slow” book. It is more deliberate in letting the setting and the world be as much of a character as Jack. Readers who need to be driven from page to page by the plot might tire of it, but those who enjoy discovering magic while unraveling a mystery will enjoy this one.
