As I started to think about the Summer Reading Theme for this next year, I started to ponder all things science-like. And of course one of the places that my brain goes is to inventors. And when I think of inventors, I think about things they invent…like robots. Now I know that robots aren’t all that science-y, but think of all the STEM things you could do with a robot story time! Oh, the possibilities! And as I started to think about things of that sort…I of course came up with a list of some of my favorite Robot Picture Books. And here it is (in no particular order):
by Sean Taylor and Ross Collins
This is about a little girl who is left at home while her parents go out for the night. But her parents aren’t concerned because they bought all of these new robots that will feed her, bathe her, and put her to bed. But things don’t go according to plan…and the parents come home to find that robots without human supervision can be pretty messy.
Beep and Bah
by James Burks
In this book a goat is friends with a robot. When the goat finds only one sock, the Robot Beep decides to look all over the world for Bah’s missing sock. The journey is quite long and full of crazy terrain. And of course at the end the readers will enjoy a fun surprise as to where the missing sock was all along.
by Kelly DiPucchio
This is one of those sweet stories. Clink is a robot that only wants to be bought from the robot store and loved by an owner. Of course the things that Clink can do aren’t usually what people want in a robot (playing music and burning toast). So when nobody comes to get him…he starts to think he isn’t worth anything at all. But then along comes one owner who is just right for this fun-loving robot. And then all live happily ever after (burnt toast and all).
The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot
by Margaret McNamara and Mark Fearing
This story goes to show that not all robots are good or useful. Plus it is a fun twist on the classic story of the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. These three aliens have to figure out just what kind of home would be perfect to keep safe from this big bad robot…but thankfully the third little alien is pretty smart and can save the day!
Boy + Bot
by Amy Dyckman and Dan Yaccarino
When a boy and a robot meet in the woods, they realize they can have so much fun together. Of course the boy wants to take the robot home. When Bot gets switched off the boy is worried that he is sick and tries to cure him (with human remedies) . Then when the boy goes to sleep and Bot powers back on the robot is then worried about the boy and takes him home to see if he can make him better (with all the robot remedies). This is one sweet story of friendship between a boy and a bot.
