Megastructures is one of those books that loads of reluctant readers will pour over hour after hour. It talks about loads of different structures from the tallest skyscrapers to monuments to tunnels such as the Channel Tunnel. There are pictures of completed projects as well as pictures of the project under construction. Readers will be fascinated with the danger and magnitude of each of these different structures and how they have changed the world.
I especially was interested in this book seeing how Hurricane Sandy just unleashed the elements on many tunnels and skyscrapers. Since I had read this book, I more fully understood the dangers and ingenuity that kept the structures in tact. More than ever I am grateful and in awe of such megastructures.
What to do after reading this book:
Visit a megastructure near you.
Build a bridge using toothpicks and marshmallows (or dried spaghetti and marshmallows).
Take a field trip around your home. Figure out what makes the home safe and secure. Learn how it was built.
Talk to an engineer or a construction worker.
